Featured Kent Student: Michael Joyce
Michael Joyce, has just graduated in classical and archaeological studies from of the University of Kent. Thanks to the award of a Kent fieldwork bursary he has recently developed a love of field archaeology, having being primarily a classics student. During his time at Ostia, he seems to have developed a sixth sense for discovering precious finds. He found the first coin, as described in the finds section.
He also found the large fragment of inscription whilst he was devegetating the forum. We asked Michael what his secret is and what is next in his seemingly neverending catalouge of success, he replied excitedly “The sky’s the limit really, I don’t think there is any limit to my archaeological talent. As for my secret… well, it’s a secret! Good luck at getting as good as me, losers.”
When not working hard on the site, Michael enjoys relaxing in the sunshine and thinking about how awesome he is at throwing a Frisbee and downing pints of beer. He only possesses two T-shirts: one for digging, the other for clean living. He has a wide taste in music; his favourite band at the moment is Joe Dolce. When asked why he enjoys the music of Joe Dolce so much, Michael answered “It’s a topical thing, wherever I am in the world, I like to immerse myself in culture and history, and Italy is no exception. I feel it encapsulates exactly what Italy is about, from the atmosphere right down to the people, it’s just perfect”.

Yeah, well, perhaps you could point out that the T-shirt shown was pictured on the first or second day of digging and that by the time we flew back last Sunday it was the colour of the shorts he’s wearing! And as for his socks….. Most passengers thought he was sleeping but he’d actually passed out after reaching down to remove his shoes.
