Back to Ostia! Site tour of the city

Everyone had fun exploring Ostia!

The Kent-Berlin Ostia 2009 excavations have begun. We are supported this year by a field school collaboration with UCLA, which has allowed us to bring in more staff and continue our work on the foro della statua eroica in the centre of the ancient city of Ostia. We have students from Kent, London, Cologne, Berlin and Seattle participating, as well as a staff of professional and academic archaeologists from the UK, Canada and Switzerland. See our other pages soon, for news of this year’s project objectives.

We have spent the day with our new students touring the ruins – visiting the ancient shops, the forum, the baths and houses of the late Roman city. Axel Gering gave a memorable site tour and Luke Lavan enjoyed recreating a daily aristocratic ‘audience’ in a late Roman reception room with his students. Not everyone was happy to be organised by precedence (those of lowest status came in first and out last), but everyone enjoyed seeing Luke prostrate himself and kiss Axel’s ‘slipper’ (very late Roman) . Such eccentricities could be forgiven after a stimulating week of sight-seeing in Rome.
