Scorpions and market stalls

Today on site it has been really hot. The day started with a little drama – the cool shady room in which we installed our finds depot seems to be full of scorpions, or at least one of them – a little black fellow – running up and down our finds bench. We have started giving site tours, as a means to educate tourists and promote late antique Ostia. So far we have had French, Germans, Americans, Portugese and Italians, with a smattering of other nationalities.

Possible market stall post holes have been found.

Axel’s team have made the most progress today, with the discovery of small rectangular post holes (ca. 3x3cm) cut through the late paving of the forum. They are strangely similar to a pair of holes recovered from the façade of the forum, and might represent either scaffolding or the traces of market stalls – very appropriate for a plaza of the kind we are excavating. It is really quite astonishing what even a re-cleaning of last-year’s trenches is revealing.
