More Walls Emerge

Cleaning of the foro della statua eroica has continued apace. All of the areas excavated last year have been uncovered, and many new features are emerging. We have at least one Early Imperial wall coming through and several Medieval unmortared rubble walls, composed of fragmentary tile, brick, marble and even bits of pot. Fragments of unusual pottery have been recovered from above the walls, which may be Medieval: it has incised and stamped decoration. Pottery classification starts next week.

A sherd of possibly Medieval pottery was found.

Life on site has started to get a little easier: the temperature has gone down slightly, and there are occasionally clouds, for a few minutes at a time. But with clouds comes humidity and this can make us all feel a little faint. To manage this we have been taking long lunch breaks beneath the shade of our great Roman pine tree, under which quite a few of us have been taking naps. In the absence of pillows our diggers have been getting to know each other a little better, resting their heads on the bellies of others, with amusing results.
