Down behind the Arch

In the south corner of the forum, where Sebastian and Judith have been digging is a monumental arch, faced in marble, which was blocked sometime in late antiquity in order probably to facilitate the new monumental entrance to the palaestra of the forum baths. This is no ordinary street blocking, being a the route of the cardo into the main forum, so it is effectively a blocking of the cardo.

Bernard Mulholland, one of our super-diggers is now cleaning up the back of this area, where surviving stratigraphy has been partially cut by an early excavation trench. He has revealed a sequence of floors – a basalt road paving at a higher level than the cardo, followed by a tile file then a mortar build up for a mosaic floor. In one small surviving section the relationship with the late monumental entrance of the palaestra survives and might give us some dating evidence.
